Rural Educator's Handbook: An Orientation Guide  It is crucial for you as an educator in the Bush to understand that this is a true cross-cultural experience and a unique opportunity for your learning.  Listening and observing will serve you better than any other behaviors you may choose.  Tolerance, flexibility, humility and patience with yourself and others are essential personal qualities for a successful Alaska Bush experience.  This handbook will also provide helpful information about travel, clothing, groceries, and other issues that you will face as you move to rural Alaska.

To request a copy, please email Clare Lewis or print a PDF copy of the handbook.

Save those receipts! At long last the IRS has recognized the money that teachers pay out of their pockets every year to buy classroom supplies.  A new ruling will allow you to deduct up to $250 in your expenses by subtracting it directly from your adjusted gross income. (The old law allowed educators to declare such expenses only as miscellaneous itemized deductions.)  To qualify for the new deduction, you must work at least 900 hours as a teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide.  And you must keep a record of your expenses.  For details, see IRS Publication 3991 available at www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-829-3676
