Welcome to 2008
The legislature gaveled in yesterday but did not hear Governor
Palin’s address until after some fireworks between the Governor
and Senate President Lyda Green. They eventually agreed on a 4
pm speech and Governor Palin left for Georgia to witness the
graduation of her son Track from Army boot camp.
Congratulations to Track Palin!
LCS/Legislative
Update
Veteran readers of the NEA-Alaska LCS know that it stands for
Legislative Contact System. As our recipient list continues to
grow we needed a less esoteric title and have gone with the
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE. As always we are looking for feedback on
the new design of the LCS/legislative update and for suggestions
of what you want to see. It’s easy to reach us. You can
“reply” or click on “contact your NEA-Alaska Government
relations team” on the second resource link above.
Summer School for Lawmakers
OK, so there were only 10 legislators and a public member
appointed by the Governor. The fact remains the Joint
Legislative Education Funding Task Force met over several full
days over the summer of 2007 and they produce a solid work
product. NEA-Alaska was in attendance at the meetings which
were chaired by Rep. Mike Hawker (Anchorage). Kudos to Rep.
Hawker and his staff for producing timely documentation and
keeping the hearings moving toward a final product.
NEA-Alaska will address the differences in the Task Force
recommendations and Governor Palin’s K-12 funding proposal after
the 52nd annual NEA-Alaska Delegate Assembly adjourns on January
26th.
NEA-Alaska Delegate Assembly
The 52nd annual NEA-Alaska Delegate Assembly (DA) occurs January
24-26, 2008 at the Anchorage Hilton. The DA is where
approximately 400 delegates, elected by the 13,000 members of
NEA-Alaska meet to set the policy of NEA-Alaska for the year.
The DA predates Alaska statehood and is the major event of the
year for NEA-Alaska.
Next LCS/Legislative Update
The next LCS will be produced on Tuesday, January 22nd. Only 88
more days until the scheduled adjournment of the 2008 session
If you know anyone who wishes to receive the LCS/Legislative
Update, please
send us an e-mail with their home e-mail address if
possible, and we’ll add them to the growing list of K-12
education advocates
