WEEK NUMBER TWO
IN JUNEAU
NEA-Alaska staff and governance has been in Juneau today meeting
with the capitol press corps as well as several lawmakers.
President Bjork has been leading the meetings. Bill also met
with a half-dozen lawmakers on Monday. NEA-Alaska continues to
stress the priorities of Adequate Funding and Retirement
Matters. NEA-Alaska has now met with about one-half of
the legislature to date. We continue to meet with all lawmakers
as schedules allow.
Today is the 8th
legislative day and committees are starting to meet and hear
legislation. Ethics is front and center and legislation was
heard today in House State Affairs but not moved from
committee.
SENATE SPECIAL
COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
The State Senate has created a
special committee on Education for the 25th Alaska
Legislature. Sen. Gary Stevens (Kodiak) will chair the
committee. The first meeting is tomorrow (see calendar). It
appears that most education bills will go to this committee as a
first referral. NEA-Alaska will continue to update members on
the workings of this committee.
A MESSAGE FROM
YOUR LOBBY TEAM
We know you are busy and we will
strive to keep the LCS readable and succinct. We plan on
sending the LCS message twice weekly until Day 60 of session and
then three times weekly after that day. If situations warrant
we will send the LCS more often. When legislation is scheduled
for public hearings we will let you know. If you have questions
please e-mail us or give us a call. Thanks for your continued
advocacy for public education!
