WELCOME BACK

NEA-Alaska has been making the rounds at the capitol building for the past two days.  NEA-Alaska met with a dozen lawmakers over the past two days.  A bi-partisan mix of Senators and Representatives.  NEA-Alaska has been stressing the priorities of Adequate Funding and Retirement Matters.

Most of Tuesday was designated for the swearing in of lawmakers and reading of bills for the first time.  An interesting development was the House referral of House Bill 1 (Base Student Allocation) directly to the Finance committee.  In past years such legislation has merited three committee referrals.  It could be the pressure of trying to finish session in a shorter timeframe this year.  Voters approved a 90 day session in November and it will go into effect in 2008.  This year could be the dry run.

ETHICS

Tomorrow, lawmakers will spend the day in an ethics workshop.  This will keep things quiet in the legislative hallways until at least next week.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOBBY TEAM

We know you are busy and we will strive to keep the LCS readable and succinct.  When legislation is scheduled for public hearings we will let you know.  If you have questions please e-mail us or give us a call.  Thanks for your continued advocacy for public education!
