The Social Security Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision

In regards to Social Security Offsets, the repeal legislation is not expected to move this session, as it is an election year.  The rule of thumb is not to touch Social Security in election years.  Our concerns are being heard, and the TRS Board did send a unanimous letter to our congressional delegation supporting repeal.  U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Don Young have added their names as co-sponsors of the repeal legislation in Congress.

In the meantime, NEA-Alaska/Retired achieved in spring 2004 a resolution from the Alaska Legislature urging Congress to repeal these discriminatory pension offsets.  Gov. Frank Murkowski signed the resolution in May 2004.

To raise our members' awareness about the issue, NEA-Alaska/Retired has produced and distributed booklets.  If you would like one, contact Kim Cherry (1-800-996-3225) at the Anchorage NEA-Alaska office or email Kim at kimila.cherry@neaalaska.org .
