Unity is Power – in pension fight and Election
2008

All of us know that the challenges facing
public education are vast and complex. If we are to build a bright
future for Alaska’s children, our own members, and the entire education
family, it will take focused unity and a commitment to solidarity.
Webster defines solidarity as “unanimity of attitude or purpose between
members of a group or class.”
We are an extension of other groups with
whom we have more in common than we have differences. Building strong
relationships, appreciating our diversity, and embracing our shared
interests will move us in a common direction to effect positive change.
Can we bring about change? Of course we can!
We can build strong locals and reach out to build strong coalitions and
community partnerships. We’re making real progress in that arena. Our
coalition with Alaska’s other unions and the National Public Pension
Coalition (NPPC) is moving forward around a unified strategy. We’ve also
recently been joined by other retirement groups, including the Alaska
AARP. Our collective voice is powerful. Our mission is to restore a
stable and dependable pension system for Alaska’s public employees.
The future for Alaska’s children, schools,
workforce, economy, public safety, and political health depends on
attracting and keeping quality public employees. We can do this by
restoring Alaska’s promise of a pension, a secure and dependable
livelihood for the public sector’s dedication and commitment to our
great state.
Through continued building of strong
coalitions, we will multiply our political power many times over.
Election 2008 – now – is the time to be politically engaged and
involved. Together we can elect candidates who stand up for schools and
children and for restoring a secure future for all public employees. |
